Reasons for making a Will
Gifts in Wills are vital to the work of most charities, including the Family Holiday Association. After you’ve taken care of loved ones, you may wish to leave a gift in your Will to your favourite charity and pass on something wonderful to future generations.
The donation can be as small or large as you like – every gift makes a big difference.
When to make a Will?
A will is a legal document you create that sets out instructions for who will inherit your estate and what should happen after you die. If you die without one, your estate will be distributed according to strict rules, meaning the people you care about may lose out.
Often it is key moments in life that trigger people into considering their Will arrangements. The Wills team at Co-op Legal Services recently shared their insight into the most common reasons they hear for writing a Will.
- Buying a house (particularly important if an unmarried couple are cohabiting)
- Suffering a bereavement
- Getting divorced (a lot of people don’t know how divorce impacts the terms of a Will)
- Getting married (a lot of people don’t realise getting married invalidates Wills)
- Disinheriting someone
- Having a child
- Starting a business
And yet many people still fail to make a Will. Recent research from insurance company Royal London (December 2018) suggests that 54% of UK adults don’t have a Will, and 5.4 million people have no idea how to make one. If you are yet to make a Will, it is something you should consider whatever your circumstances.
